BOULEVARD RINGSTRASSE

Burgtheater (Ring)

With his decree of 1857, emperor Franz Joseph I made the demolition of the city walls possible. A construction boom followed right in front of the former gates of Vienna. The result is a worth seeing boulevard, lined with a number of public buildings and gardens as well as magnificent palaces of the nobility of the 19th century. We will start our walk at Schwarzenbergplatz and follow the Ringstrasse clockwise to Rathausplatz.

THE AUGARTEN

Main entrance to the Augarten

A Viennese federal garden as an experience of nature and a cultural oasis

“A place of amusement dedicated to everyone. From your appraiser” we read above the triumphal arch entrance portal of the Augarten. We gladly accept the invitation from 1775 and enter the front garden, with a view of the elongated building of the porcelain factory, as the end of a former courtyard of a palace. Now it becomes puzzling: Where do we see the Old Favorita, the summer palace of the Habsburgs? What is the name of the palace on the right over the surrounding wall? Do we already see the oldest baroque garden in Vienna?

During the approximately two-hour guided walk, I tell you many exciting stories about famous people and historical events related to the Augarten. And: How did the time-honored baroque garden develop into a modern leisure oasis with a famous manufactory and a classy boarding school.

Best examples are the scientist Ruđer Bošković, bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer and sculptor Ivan Meštrović. During our city walk we will get to know sites where the archbishops Leopold and Sigismund Kollonitsch, politician Anton Grassalkovich and composer Franz von Suppé lived and worked and we will find out about their reference to Croatia. Starting point is in front of the Am Hof Church where for the last 50 years the croatian catholic community is celebrating their holy fairs. We will together dip into "croatian" Vienna.
